Prayer
Prayer is not a science, but that doesn't mean we cannot
use methods in prayer!
I sometimes can get mixed up in my prayer times. I
forget when I am asking God for help or when I am
waiting on Him for an answer. One method I have found
that has worked for me to keep my praying structured has
to do with how I position myself physically when I
pray. I don't mean laying down verses standing or
walking. Usually when I do my morning prayer time I am
sitting, usually in a rocking chair or porch swing. I
find that the motion of the chair or swing helps to keep
me awake!
So there I am swinging away, but that is not the only
positioning I want to write to you about. This next
step is the most helpful part; as I begin to pray I put
my hands on my knees, with my palms pointing down, and
my fingers draped around my knee. If I were to pull my
arms straight up into the air, my hands would be in a
position that would look like I had just dropped or
released something I had been holding onto. That is a
key point to understand! The first parts of my prayer
time I am bringing my needs and desires to the Lord and
dropping or releasing them at His feet. Giving them
over to His control, I know longer have to carry those
burdens alone! Praise the Lord! He is now carrying
them, and he is supporting me as I go throughout my day.
Now comes the second part, this is the part that most
folks skip over, but I believe it to be the most
important part of our daily time with the Lord. Once I
have dropped all my concerns at the Lords feet, I then
turn my hands over, palms facing upward in a receiving
posture. God wants so much to communicate with us, but
in order for communication to work it must be a two-way
conversation. We speak, then we wait for His response.
Holding my hands out in a receiving posture helps me to
remember to wait and receive from Him.
I challenge you to try this method in your daily prayer
time. I pray you will find it as helpful as I did.
After you have tried this for a few days or weeks, come
see me at church and let me know how this is working for
you, I would love to hear from each of you!
